Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex: Almost Out!

In a couple of hours, the latest and brightest version of Ubuntu — the Intrepid Ibex — is due to be released! I’m really looking forward to upgrading my Thinkpad T61 to the latest release. Some of the key features of the new Ubuntu 8.10:

Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition is designed for the pervasively connected digital lifestyle. With new 3G network support, users can move smoothly from wired and WiFi networks onto 3G cellphone networks while traveling. Ubuntu 8.10 is also built to be shared – users can start a quick “guest session” on the fly and let someone use their computer to surf the web or check email, while maintaining the security and integrity of their own data. And if that person really enjoys their brief session as an Ubuntu guest, they can put Ubuntu on any USB key and take it home to install on their own computer rather than having to burn a CD.

As a bonus, all Ubuntu 8.10 users will be able to enjoy programming from the BBC, with high quality streamed content available through the default media players in Ubuntu 8.10. Canonical has worked with the BBC to make sure that much of the material is available to users in all locations.

Long story short: it’s simple, very usable, and completely free. I still don’t understand why people remain with Window$. Office suite? Try OpenOffice. Photoshop? Try Gimp. In my opinion, Linux — especially with a distribution as user-friendly as Ubuntu — can perform every day-to-day task as well as — if not better than — Window$. Oh and let’s not go into the details about how much less resources a linux operating system sucks up, how much less likely it is to crash on you, and how much less likely you are to catch malware.

Well… I’m really looking forward to upgrading!

  • I agree with everything… however, Ubuntu does seem to crash more often than Windows… at least with Hardy Heron. Let’s hope that Ibex is a little more stable.

I’m so excited for the tabbed file manager! Now to find time to install it!

  • It crashes more often than Window$? Hmm… at least I’ve never experienced it with my laptop. Probably a hardware thing?
