UBC DC++ RezHub

Rezhub is a way to download and share video or music files at high speed with your fellow students on the campus network. Only computers on campus are allowed, so transfers will be fast and what you download won’t count toward your daily transfer quota.

So on my traffic logs, I’ve been getting searches like these lately:

  • ubc dc++ address
  • connect to dc++ at ubc
  • fast file sharing ubc
  • using dc++ ubc
  • ubc dc++ connection address
  • ubc dc++ hub

Here’s how to access it. According to Andre:

Don’t worry, there is a way to get around the bandwidth limits that they place on us. Direct file sharing does not take up bandwidth and there is a big network in residence. You just need a client like DC++ (there is a Linux version for Ubuntu). Just connect to rezhub.zapto.org:9306 and you will have over 14TB of stuff to choose from. Enjoy!

For detailed instructions, check out UBC RezHub.

*Update: beginning of November, 08, rezhub hasn’t been behaving normally. Occasional ups and downs…

**Update, Dec. 3, 08: is it just me, or is RezHub down?

***Update, Jan. 09: looks like RezHub is back to normal, with over 20TB of files being shared at any given time. Apparently the admin forgot to pay the VPN bills…

****Update, Jan. 09: hmm this is strange: I’m on the regular ubc wireless network and I’m able to download files from DC++… I’m now wondering whether this is only limited to wired connections on residences.

    Where did I post that comment? It’s true though. The best thing is that the amount of data goes up all the time, school just started and I’m seeing stats like 16TB. I just really wish I knew who was actually hosting it!

    Hey why can’t I use Rezhub in the library or elsewhere on campus. It says I need to be on Resnet. That’s silly I’m still on the campus network I just don’t live in Res anymore.

    Yeah it seems like the residences use their own networks… so I guess you gotta be plugged-in (aka wifi doesn’t do it) to be a part of it.

    Oh, you can connect to RezHub from the wireless network — at least in the commonsblock at Vanier

      Try setting your “slots” to at least 3 — the option should be in the program’s setting somewhere.

    So I’m new to this. I have downloaded the DC++ and I have shared my music and movies, but when I try to connect from thunderbird residence I get messages such as my ISP/IP is not allowed on this hub and also that I don’t have enough slots open?

    I’ll appreciate if someone can help me.

      As for the slots issue, simple set the number of slots that are opened to at least 3 (look around in the application’s options).

      Hmm… I’m not sure what’s causing the IP issue. As long as you’re on the UBC network, you should be able to connect to rezhub.

    I’ve def been able to download tons of stuff just as fast as I can in rez, but on the regular wireless network around campus.
