Stubborn Nail House - Demolished
I had previously written about a house owner with a castle-like “nail house” who was fighting the Chinese legal system to preserve his property.
So how long did it last? It lasted a week, after reportedly reaching a deal with the local authorities (ah ha! I was right again :P).

So what’s my take on this? The couple manged to get a deal, and maintained their image and ideals. They gained some publicity, and changed the way the Chinese government deals with land disputes.
What do you think? Please share your comments; I’d like to hear from you!

I think it is great. I’m glad that people can stick to their ideals without being persecuted.
Good for the couple!
Btw, I faved your blog on Technorati. I enjoyed what you’ve written so far
they did not stick to their ideals longer though @ AgentSully.
Maybe they were given enough cash? haha
Hey Eastwood.
You know, I’m glad they were able to get some good pub for their stance and all that, but I tend to agree with Chino. I would have liked to see that house stay there for a good long time and really drive that point home. Obviously I have no way of knowing whether they got paid off or not, and I’d lie to think not. But whether cash was involved or not, I think another month or so would have been stronger. Much longer than that and it probably would have faded from the headlines and lost its effectiveness.
Yeah well. I guess the thing is they had the courage to stand up to the Powers That Be, and a whole lot of folks wouldn’t even do that for 5 minutes…
I bet you they were paid enough for them to give in.
it’s good to know though that people are standing up for themselves.
it is really funny. they are really brave to fight the cjinese gov’t.
There is something wrong with the reports here. I am now staying in Shanghai and has first hand news and tracking this event daily.
The argument is NOT between the proprietor and the government. No. The argument is between the developer and the proprietor. The developer refused to give compensation to the proprietor in accordance to rights accorded to the proprietor by the law. However, the developer does have the rights to give any kind of deals to the proprietor according to law. So, both sides insists on their own rights resulting in the event we saw.
Hope this clears things up.
I have first hand news on everything that happens in China, so let me know if you want to know more.
I hope they got a real good payout. I’m sure that’s the main reason they chose to hold out that long.
