Rogers Cellphone Woes…

So when I realized that I had spent over $8 on texting for the month of September on the Rogers Network 25 plan, I immediately switched over the the student My 10 plan. This is where the adventure begins…

Customer Support Time

I still haven’t figured out whether Rogers outsources to Indian call centres (they probably do… the world is flat!), since I heard three different types of accents the three time that I called. On average, the wait time for their customer support line is anywhere from 10 – 25 minutes. Can’t complain: I usually put my phone on speaker mode and do stuff while their cheesy tunes play in the background.

But… but! There was this one time when I was musically entertained for over 45 minutes. Good times. I noticed that worst time to call is usually noon (probably when all the office people get their lunch breaks and start having trouble with their phones?) and the best time at around 9pm (that’s the time when I got on the line with a really supportive representative who, at the same time, spoke good English).

Over-Billing

Long story short, Rogers’ system messed up, and I was over-billed. They also cancelled my 3-month-unlimited calling feature during the mess-up. So I called. Not only did I get the extra charges waived, but also I manged to get another 3 months of unlimited calling. Not too bad a deal.

Here Comes My Rant

As you can tell, this post is going all over the place. It doesn’t have thesis… So here comes my Rogers rant: they (Rogers and Fido) are the only bloody GSM (where you plug in a SIM card) monopolies in town and they charge bloody ridiculous rates (service charge, 9/11 fee, etc., etc., comes to minimum $40-ish every month) and their bind you to contracts and they try to charge you for email to SMS (try it… send an email to yourcellnumber@pcs.rogers.com) and.. and.. an’!!

Come the end of the day, I’m still with Rogers. How sad.

Some Quick Stats

Oh, right, if you’ve been trying to reach me on my cell in the last 3 days or so and always end up hearing my voice mail, or if you’ve been texting and I haven’t replied, be assured, that I don’t hate you. :) I took my cell home over the weekend without the charger. Guess what happened?

I’m with Fido. I also have beef. And at the end of the day, I’m also still with them. Contracted until mid-next year… and it’s quite the money-sucker.

Once your contract’s up, you can probably call them and threaten to cancel your plan — I’m sure they’ll give you a better deal then

I’m currently using the Rogers MY-10 plan. You get unlimited everything between you and the 10 numbers that you choose. Liking it so far.
