News These Days

Following a similar and somewhat “leftist” theme as my previous post, I’d like to share my thoughts on news these days.  So what’s been “new” lately?

  • North Korea launches a bloody projectile
  • Obama gets a puppy
  • American captain’s heroism w/ pirates

So North Korea launched some sort of space projectile a while back. Big deal. There was no point for the BBC News to have made this a highlighted, breaking news-item on their front page. So what if it was a missile, a satellite? Let’s quit practising McCarthyism and mind our own business. Don’t tell me only Israel is allowed to carry nuclear warheads.

Then, Obama gets a puppy — a “Portuguese Water Dog”. This received more attention than did breakthroughs in the use of Nanotechnology for HIV tests in rural areas of Africa. This kind of news ought to be left for gossip magazines.

Oh, and there’s the pirates. Piracy on the Indian Ocean has been happening for quite some time. A news item occasionally pops up here and there, informing us of the hijacking of Asian or European crews…etc. Alas! When an American is held captive, we hear, in the headlines, nothing but this. Digusting. Concurrently, a French family was rescued from pirates — sadly, with the father killed — and there was very little coverage.

On the lighter side, have you heard about the unlikely contestant of Britain Got Talent early this week getting raves over the internet.

It also captured millions of fans, too in a matter of less than a week.

Oh yeah, I’ve seen Susan Boyle’s performance — not a bad show.

Were her physical appearance slightly better — or, more ordinary, should I say — people wouldn’t have reacted the way they did (both before and after her singing). This says a lot about our society.

North Korea launching the missile IS a big deal. The implications of such event is beyond the purview of this reply, but you have to know that this affects the U.S. policy towards NK and also, South Korean government stance against NK. The effects of the failed ‘Sunshine Policy” is indirectly shown in this missile launching, and the last thing Koreans want is a war, which devastates everything the SKoreans have built so far: 11th largest Economic Power, 1st IT nation, and so much more. The current government under “Lee Myung Bak”, of the Grand National Party, is very conservative, therefore, their hardline policies towards NK is not helping the situation either. I don’t know if you are leaning towards leftist idea, but NK’s actions are in fact, a big deal in terms of international relations. It is definately NOT McCarthyism in that NK is practising isolationism and is not part of the global exchange that has been going on for the last few decades. NK is an immature entity that cannot govern in its own. Its a hermit kingdom “led” by Kim Jung Il and his followers. Israel having a nuclear warhead and NK having a nuclear warhead is a VERY different matter.

As an outsider, I know very little about this subject (time to hit the history books!)

Wouldn’t you agree, though, that the current policies — economic sanctions, joint military drills, bi-directional propaganda (for instance, flyers in ballons)…etc. — are counter-productive? This is clearly an-eye-for-an-eye.
