It's September 2011, and I have just come across this article. It showed real knowledge and understanding of the media history of schizophrenia and related disorders.

So: a belated thank you for your writing. We still struggle to inform the public, politicians and professionals that serious mental illnesses are no-fault biological diseases of the brain.

It's not easy. We have to move society away from the grasp of sociology to describe serious mental illnesses, and then educate folks about the scientific research which will find better medications and eventually a cure for these horrific diseases.

Parent/advocates have established a new website www.cfact.ca, where you can see our continuing struggles.

Thank you very much for your own interest which you demonstrate here so clearly and articulately.

Bless .

Thanks, Tim.

The fact that one in five Canadians will be affected by one form of mental illness or another -- most commonly being depression or anxiety, something that many can relate to -- suggest that, perhaps, more ought to be done to increase our awareness.

Interesting post, Eastwood. Mental illness is definitely a topic the general public should know more about. I think it is like any disease where if neither you nor your family/friends have experienced it, you don't know anything about it. I like the emphasis in your article that media outlets has powerful influences over the general public and should have the responsibility to portray mental illness accurately.
