Firefox 3: Hotmail “Browser Upgrade”

September 26th, 2008

Lately, I’ve been getting the following message from Hotmail every time I try to login to my account through Firefox 3.03 running Ubuntu Hard Heron:

Upgrade your web browser
We recommend that you upgrade your web browser so you can get the most out of Windows Live Hotmail. Upgrading should only take a few minutes. To get started, choose one of the browsers below…

If you don’t want to upgrade right now you can still continue to Windows Live Hotmail, but some parts of it may not work and it may not be displayed properly.

It has been a bit of an annoyance, but I didn’t pay too much attention to it until today, when my hyper-linked signature started appearing as HTML tags and my front started turning all weird. Without a doubt, I know some of you would ask, “why not Gmail”? I’ve had the same email address forever. It’s too late to switch over.

Solution

  1. In the address bar of Firefox, type in:
    about:config
  2. Where it says:
    general.useragent.vendor
remove the value of the string so that it is blank
  3. Voila! Problem solved

There you have it. Don’t we just “love” Micro$oft?

Give Ubuntu a try; it just works

The problem is annoying and I’m glad I found a solution, but the problem isn’t even a tenth as annoying as when people use a dollar sign as an ‘S’ in Microsoft.

“Get it! Microsoft is a large, profitable corporation (as opposed to other faceless corporations that exist only to please you) and so I denote said largeness by inserting a dollar sign! Aren’t I clever?!”
