Dell to use Ubuntu on Linux PCs - The Free Operating System of Tomorrow (Tomorrow is now!)

May 1st, 2007

Definition of Linux in a Nutshell:

“Linux is an open source operating system for computers. The operating system of a computer is the basic instructions that tell the electronic parts of the computer what to do and how to work. “Open source” means that everyone can see how it works and change it if they want to. This is different from “closed source,” which is software that makes it hard to change or see how it works. Windows is an example of a “closed source” operating system.

A lot of the important software made for computers is made for Windows because it is more popular. There is lots of different software for Linux and since Linux is open source it means that most of the software for it is open source too, and free. This is one of the main reasons why some people like to use Linux more than Windows.”

BBC News has just reported that Dell has choosing Ubuntu Linux as the standard distribution for their Linux systems.

This is excellent news for the Open-Source community! I have not personally used Ubuntu (instead, Gentoo), but believe that Ubuntu is a very user-friendly distrubution of Linux that is comparable with Windows.

Many of you may have heard of Windows Vista’s new “Aero” graphical user interface. It’s supposed to be highly user-friendly, attractive, fexible…etc. Linux has easily surpassed the best and latest of M$’s gadets. Take a look below for the graphical user interface comparison between the Vista Aero interface and the Beryl interface of Ubuntu:

For Vista, the cheapest rates out there are at least $200+ of your hard earned dollars.

Linux? Completely free. That’s right, all distributions of Linux, whether it’s RedHat, Gentoo, Ubuntu…etc., are completely free and distributed under open-source licenses. Ubuntu, for example, can be downloaded right off of its website.

Well, that’s all I have to say about Linux for now. Read the BBC Article and refer to Wikipedia for more information.
