Physical Sciences
This seminar is geared towards students in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Faculty of Forestry, and School of Human Kinetics. There will be two sections along with a Q&A Period:
- Chemistry
Jackie Stewart will provide a faculty perspective on how students can succeed in their first-year chemistry courses (CHEM 121/123). Dr. Stewart recently received the Killam Teaching Award for Science Instructors, co-wrote the new CHEM 121 textbook, and serves as Skylight Affiliate for the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative.
- Physics
Dr. Jim Carolan will share his advice on how students can excel in their first-year physics courses and lay a solid foundation for further studies in the physical sciences. Dr. Carolan has a wealth of teaching experience; he is a Professor Emeritus and is a Science and Teaching Fellow with the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative.
Arts & Humanities
Do you need to increase your strength with MLA or APA style? Want to lose those unwanted errors in your bibliography? Whip your citation skills into shape by attending Citation Bootcamp Seminar. With experts from UBC Library and the Writing Centre, you will learn the importance of citing sources, gain tips for paraphrasing with ease, and get hands-on practise citing sources in a variety of formats.
- Miss Julie Mitchell will be presenting this seminar. Julie is currently the Learning Service Librarian at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and has many years of experience working collaboratively with the campus community to develop and deliver learning support and academic enhancement opportunities for students.
- Co-presenting this seminar will be Miss Roma Illnyckyj. Roma is currently a graduate student in the M.A. program focusing on Modern Language Education at UBC.
Engineering
This seminar is aimed at first-year engineering students. The purpose is to deliver academic skills as well as engineering professional skills. In terms of academic skills, the focuses will be time management, learning styles in engineering courses, team working, and methods to balance between studying and other commitments. Through various activities and discussions, students will gain an understanding of these expected academic skills. The seminar will also focus on engineering professional skills, discussing “hard skills” which are beneficial for different engineering disciplines. At the same time, “soft skills” necessary for success in future careers will be brought up. Students will come out of this seminar with an understanding of time management in engineering courses and the skills necessary to be successful. This seminar is presented by Engineering students from the E-Team.
Life Sciences
This seminar is geared towards students in the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Land and Food Systems, Faculty of Forestry, and School of Human Kinetics. There will be two sections as well as a Q&A Period:
- Biology
Dr. Agnes Lacombe and Sabine Lague will share their advice on how students can excel in their first-year biology courses (BIOL 111/112/121/140). Dr. Lacombe is a zoology professor who was awarded the Killam Teaching Award for Science Instructors in 2008; Sabine Lague is a dean’s honour list fourth year student in science (honours animal biology) and music (flute) pursuing medicine with the intent to study pediatrics.
- Chemistry
Dr. Jennifer Love will provide a faculty perspective on how students can succeed in their first-year chemistry courses (CHEM 121/123) and lay a solid foundation for further studies in chemistry. Dr. Love received the Killam Teaching Award for Science Instructors in 2009 as well as the prestigious AstraZeneca Canada Award in Chemistry in 2008.
Business & Math
This seminar is geared towards students pursuing a major or minor in Commerce, and will consist of the following three sections:
- Organisational Behaviour: Written and Oral Communication
Learn how to participate in class, write successful reports, make effective oral case presentations, and conquer the multiple-choice exams.
- Economics: Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis
Whether you have Gateman or Lemche, learn how to ace your exams by understanding the key economic concepts, thinking critically about problems, and analyzing graphs and diagrams.
- Calculus: Approaches to Problem Solving
Learn how to study smarter for Math 104/Math 184, get the most from doing your homework and problems sets, and approach word problems with a structured framework.
The three sections will be presented by Michelle Chiu, David Cameron, and Andrea Prabhu. All of them are Trek Scholarship recipients. Michelle and David are currently working in the Sauder Undergraduate Office as Commerce Ambassadors, and Andrea was selected for the prestigious Portfolio Management Foundation program.
